Program Presentation

Founded in 1936, the Department of French Language and Literature at the University of Tehran began its activities by recruiting undergraduate students. Since 1969, it has extended its teaching and research activities by offering training in Master of French Language and Literature, and in 2001, the department offered its first PhD program in French Literature. In this department, all specialized courses are taught in French.
Currently, the Department of French Language and Literature offers applicants six study programs at three levels, leading to Bachelor's, Master's and PhD degrees in the following fields:
- Bachelor of Arts in French Language and Literature, 4 years (8 semesters).
- Master in French Language and Literature, 2 years (4 semesters), thesis written in French.
- Master in French Translation, 2 years (4 semesters), thesis written in French.
- Master in the Teaching of French Language, 2 years (4 semesters), thesis written in French.
- PhD in French Language and Literature, 9 semesters (3 semesters of coursework and seminars, 1 semester for the preparation of the general exam). In case of success in the general exam, dissertation proposal is presented and defended: 5 semesters are devoted to research and the writing of the dissertation. The dissertation defense is public.
- Master in the Teaching of French Language, distance education, 2 years (4 semesters), in this training, the writing of an end-of-study thesis is not required.
In Iran, access to higher education is granted to students through the national entrance exams.
The main objective of the department is to train student with a solid knowledge of the French language and literature. The three levels of training enable students to access careers in research (especially in comparative literature), teaching, and translation. Graduates of the PhD program, trained in literature and different critical approaches, will be able to offer original points of view on Persian and French literary texts. They will thus contribute to the promotion of critical thinking and the application of new critical methods in Iran, as well as the transmission of the literary and cultural values embedded in the Persian Literature to French-speaking readers.

International Relations

The French Department has signed cooperation agreements with Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle University, Paul Valéry Montpellier 3 University, and Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF). These agreements facilitate bilateral missions for conferences, seminars and cotutelle grants.
The department also organizes international conferences in the field of French Literature, Comparative Literature, Translation Studies and the Teaching of French. It also invites French-speaking researchers and scholars to hold specialized conferences and seminars for faculty members and students.
Offering various student exchange programs and university double-degrees are among the future projects of the French Department.
