The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Tehran was established in August 2023, marking a significant step forward in the university's dedication to fostering academic excellence in the fields of Japanese and Chinese languages and literatures. Recognizing the increasing global significance of the East Asian region, the department aims to cultivate specialized professionals who can contribute meaningfully to the cultural, economic, and political landscapes. The program’s comprehensive curriculum emphasizes the rich cultural and historical diversity of East Asia, offering students a profound understanding of the values, arts, literature, and philosophies of ancient civilizations such as China and Japan. This cultural immersion not only broadens students' perspectives but also enhances their capabilities in establishing and nurturing international relationships.
The roots of the Japanese language program at the University of Tehran date back to 1987, with the official undergraduate program commencing in 1994. Over the years, the program has expanded to include a master's program in Japanese language teaching, introduced in 2008. The department has fostered strong connections with Japanese academic institutions, including the Japan Foundation, which has been instrumental in providing resources, scholarships, and visiting professors. The administration of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) since 2012 further exemplifies the department’s commitment to academic excellence and global standards. Similarly, the Chinese language and literature program, established in 2015, has thrived through collaboration with the Confucius Institute and Chinese educators. The program's success is highlighted by its integration of contemporary teaching methodologies, the administration of the HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test), and active participation in scholarly exchanges with Chinese research centers.
Looking ahead, the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures plans to expand its academic offerings by introducing master's and doctoral programs in Chinese language and literature and establishing programs in Korean and Hindi languages. Additionally, a doctoral program in Japanese language teaching is on the horizon. These initiatives are part of the department’s broader vision to enhance its academic repertoire and provide students with diverse and robust educational opportunities. By continuing to build on its strong foundation, the department aims to position itself as a leading center for East Asian studies, contributing to the development of knowledgeable and culturally adept professionals who will bridge the gap between Iran and the dynamic East Asian region.
