About the Department
The German language program was established in 1955 and admitted students at both the undergraduate and master's levels until 1979. From 1983 to 2001, admissions were limited to the undergraduate level. However, starting in September 2001, master's level admissions resumed. Following the signing of an agreement to establish a joint doctoral program, aimed at expanding scientific and international cooperation and creating platforms for collaboration with prestigious global academic institutions, the German language department began admitting students to the doctoral program in language education in 2005. The department currently offers a Bachelor's in German Language and Literature, a Master's in German Translation, and a Doctorate in German Language Education.
Program Introduction
Given the increasing economic and political interactions between Iran and Germany, and Germany's significant global standing, learning the German language has become essential for Persian speakers. Consequently, the German Translation program was established at the University of Tehran, consisting of two sections: foundational and specialized. The foundational section focuses on acquiring the four core language skills and deepening linguistic knowledge, while the specialized section provides theoretical preparation for the translation field and practical translation exercises.
Graduates of the German Translation program will be qualified to work in various institutions, including national broadcasting, news agencies, magazine and newspaper offices, the Iran Tourism and Tourism Organization, language teaching institutions, public and private trading companies, banks, ministries, and more. They will be able to utilize their acquired knowledge and skills in specialized written and oral translation.
Furthermore, as mentioned, the German Department of the faculty has established a Doctorate program in German Language Education to strengthen and elevate the program's standing. The objective of this program is to train individuals who, while deepening the necessary scientific knowledge regarding the theoretical principles and practical methods of teaching German, possess the ability to impart linguistic knowledge—in other words, to teach the language.
